Where to Eat in Itamonte

Since we didn’t know where to eat in Itamonte, we mostly stuck to the downtown area — though we later found out there are more options further along the highway. Still, we were happy with what we picked.

Barrica Gourmet

Friday is always pizza night for us, and this cozy spot turned out to be a great restaurant for it. We ordered our usual — half Portuguese, half four-cheese.

On Saturday, after a long day of climbing and descending on the trail, we came back starving and picked this spot. We ordered a picanha steak on a tabletop warmer, but what we’d recommend most is the chocolate brigadeiro and a “leite ninho with Nutella” dessert — worth every calorie. As we mentioned, this is definitely one of our top picks for where to eat in Itamonte.

Fun fact: just like in Passa Quatro with their Guaranita soda, Itamonte has its own local guaraná soda called Mantiqueira.

Príncipe da Laranja

• Sells orange juice for R$2.50
• Also sells oranges and savory snacks

We’d only planned on lunch after the trail, but this orange juice stand we found along the way was exactly the refresher we needed.

Restaurante Alto Astral — where to eat in Itamonte

• Self-service
• Wood-fired cooking
• Good and affordable
• Brazilian food

You can’t visit Minas Gerais without trying wood-fired cooking, so we’d recommend Restaurante Alto Astral, right on the highway, with genuinely tasty food.

Bom Sorvete

We picked up ice cream from a nearby town at a bakery, but we wouldn’t recommend it.

Te-Ki-Fim

• À la carte restaurant
• Generous portions

Setting: simple and pleasant.

Main course: chuleta (pork chop) with rice, beans, salad, fries, and egg farofa — everything was delicious.
