City view from the summit of Pico do Jaraguá, São Paulo

Pico do Jaraguá sits inside a state park of the same name, close to São Paulo, and we trained there one Saturday morning — here are our tips.

Getting to the park

From São Paulo: the entrance to Jaraguá State Park is in the western part of the city, about 23 km from downtown — around 40 minutes with no traffic. The address is R. Antônio Cardoso Nogueira, 539 - Vila Chica Luisa, São Paulo - SP, 05184-000. Google Maps route.

Entrance to Jaraguá State Park

The training run is basically all climbing and descending inside the state park — almost no flat ground, whether you’re on pavement or trail. Watch out for bikes and the occasional car speeding by on the paved sections.

The route is known as the Trilha do Pai Zé, which is technical depending on where you’re headed. There’s also a steep stretch known as the Campo do Muro descent, great for practicing with trekking poles and genuinely tiring. It’s only about half a kilometer between the climb and the descent, but it’s exhausting all the same — push through and stay on the trail.

You can round out your training on the pavement and then head up to the antenna afterward — the city view from up there is beautiful, and it’s essentially the “summit” of Pico do Jaraguá.

Our recommendations: bring a hydration pack, pack light snacks, and use plenty of sunscreen — the trail is quite exposed.
