Where to Buy Chocolate in Gramado

Gramado and Canela are known for their theme parks and themed restaurants, but for anyone who doesn’t already know, this is also chocolate country, with plenty of spots around town to eat or drink a hot chocolate — so here are our tips on where to buy chocolate in Gramado.

The town has its own chocolate production, and it’s one of the main products driving the local economy. It’s known as Brazil’s capital of artisan chocolate.

Here are the spots we visited and our take on their chocolate.

Prawer

With several shops spread across the Serra Gaúcha, and even a factory in Gramado — which, by the way, was the first in the country — Prawer (Instagram) is our first recommendation for where to buy chocolate in Gramado.

Its story began in 1975, when Brazilian Jayme Prawer discovered artisan chocolate-making in Bariloche, Argentina. A few months later, Prawer launched Brazil’s first line of artisan chocolates, in the town of Gramado.

We found Prawer’s chocolates creamier and tastier than the competition, though they also come at a higher price.

The shops have a distinctly Italian look, with shelves that seem to stretch on forever, packed with sweets!

Florybal

At Florybal (Instagram), most of the shops are themed, decorated in a cute style, and even though there are several locations spread across Gramado and along the Gramado–Canela border, they’re all priced the same — so it just comes down to which themed shop appeals to you most.

There’s an Easter-bunny-themed shop, Florybal - Bosque do Coelho, with fun, Instagrammable bunny replicas.

They also run a theme park called Parque Terra Mágica Florybal, offering visitors a magical journey through more than 40 attractions and different sets. It’s all spread across 2 km of trails through native forest, with a shop inside for chocolate.

Lugano

Like Prawer, Lugano (Instagram) is one of the pioneers of Gaúcho chocolate-making, launching in 1976.

It also has large, Instagrammable themed shops with chocolate animal figures, teddy bears, and other products.

They sell a range of souvenirs too, like craft beers, mostly from Rasen, wines, and their own chocolate shapes, like the Kikito.

The largest shop we saw was Mundo Chocolate, a Lugano theme park featuring various world landmarks built from solid chocolate, with more than 200 pieces and 30 tons of chocolate, including the world’s largest chocolate Eiffel Tower.

Caracol

Caracol (Instagram) is also one of the most well-known chocolate brands in Gramado, on the market since 1982, with a name inspired by the Cascata do Caracol waterfall, in Canela.

They have a line of rustic bars with dried fruit, made with 48% cacao chocolate, in flavors like bergamot, apricot, fig, and guava. There’s also cranberry with white chocolate and a lactose-free bergamot option, making up a healthier line.

Like Florybal, they run a theme park called Reino do Chocolate, in Gramado, with interactive activities showing how their chocolate is made, and it was Brazil’s first themed chocolate space.

Cacau Gramado

Cacau Gramado (Instagram) is a great shop for buying gifts in town, since it offers good prices, with mugs full of bonbons, bars, and truffles.

Their shops are less elaborate than the other brands, but the chocolate is still good.

The shops have a more modern, clean look, and some also sell regional souvenirs.

Planalto Chocolate

Planalto Chocolates (Instagram) is one of the region’s earliest factories, dating to 1977, making homemade chocolate, and one of the first to produce artisan ice cream in the style of Italian gelato.

Their shops are more understated, so watch out — it’s easy to walk right past without noticing.

GramadoWay

GramadoWay (Instagram) is a newer shop in Gramado, with just 13 years of history. We found it while walking down Gramado’s main avenue and spotted the Hansel and Gretel house, complete with a witch inside.

Even though the shops aren’t as large as the competition, the chocolate is worth checking out, and prices are affordable, making it a great pick for souvenirs — a solid option for where to buy chocolate in Gramado.

Lagos de Gramado

Lagos de Gramado (Instagram) is one of the newest chocolate shops in the Serra Gaúcha, but it lives up to the old saying of good and cheap, and its fair pricing really stands out.

Their chocolates are also free of hydrogenated fat, making up a healthier line.
