Miracema do Tocantins and Its River Beaches

Miracema is a town in Tocantins, close to Palmas, with beautiful river beaches — we visited two of them and genuinely loved the area.

To get there from Palmas, take TO-010, then TO-445, about ten minutes past Lajeado — just watch closely for the exit signs, since they’re not very visible.

The town’s name traces back to the old Tupi word “pirasema,” meaning “the fish’s exit” (pirá, fish, and sema, exit). The term comes from spawning season, when fish move into shallow, grassy areas to lay their eggs, making it an easier time for fishing.

What to do in Miracema do Tocantins

Praia do Paredão

• In Miracema, Tocantins
• A 30-meter rock wall
• 70 km from Palmas
• Take TO-010, then TO-445
• Cost: R$10 entry per person
• They also try to rent out tents and beach chairs for R$100, which is honestly absurd

We didn’t stay long here — we’d recommend Praia do Funil instead, since it’s the better beach, with fairer prices and better food options. Still, it’s a beautiful spot worth seeing.

Praia do Funil

• 800 meters from the entrance to Praia do Paredão
• You sit at a tent and pay for what you consume
• Has a hotel, restaurant, zipline, beach tents — we had lunch here too

We’d recommend spending the whole day here — the setting is really pleasant, and it was calm and nearly empty when we visited.

Where to eat in Miracema do Tocantins

While there are a few options in Lajeado, we’d recommend eating at Praia do Funil instead, both for the setting and because it was the best spot on our trip.

You can eat at the beach tents, but we ended up preferring the restaurant.

Mirante Gastro Bar

Setting: a restaurant with a beautiful view over the beach and the river.

Main course: Caranha fish, with rice, farofa, vinaigrette, and pirão on the side.

We really enjoyed the fish — very flavorful, though quite bony and a bit tricky to eat.

Dessert: we had a truffled leite ninho ice cream pop from Frutas do Goiás, which we really enjoyed.

Price: R$88 for two people, and it easily serves three.
