Tamandaré: An Evening Stroll

As we mentioned before, the municipality of Tamandaré has 16 km of nearly untouched coastline, shaped into stunning bays with gentle waves, great for diving — including Tamandaré beach itself, which we visited at night.

This is where the central area of Praia dos Carneiros is, close to where our hotel was, so we went for an evening stroll — though it’s not especially pretty at night.

Here are a few tips on what we did, plus a few more you could try.

What to do in Tamandaré

Forte de Santo Inácio de Loyola

• Built in 1691
• Built to defend against Dutch invasions, later used by the Brazilian Navy during World War II

We arrived at night and didn’t think it looked especially impressive, so we planned to come back in the morning — unfortunately, we ran out of time.

It’s open for visits from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Centro de Artesanato

• The town’s cultural center, located on Praça Almirante Tamandaré
• Opened in 2001
• Sells native fruits and sweets

We didn’t think it was worth a special trip out from Carneiros just for this, but if you want a souvenir, it’s worth a stop. There’s also a fruit market right next to the craft center.

Where to eat in Tamandaré

Restaurante Tapera do Sabor

Setting: genuinely pleasant and spacious.

Starter: caldinho de feijão (bean soup), tasty, though a small portion.

Main course: Peixe da Tapera, the house specialty, served with a shrimp baião de dois — rice mixed with green beans, shrimp, coalho cheese, cream, and the house’s special seasoning.

The fish itself was really tasty, but the risotto had an odd flavor we didn’t care for.

Dessert: baked cocada with ice cream, which was decent.

Drinks: Andrey picked and loved the Cerveja Ekaut, a craft beer from Recife — they offer several styles, and he went with the Munich Heller, a smooth lager at 4.7% ABV.

Price: R$180 for two people.
